3 Things to Ask Yourself Before Committing to Your New Year Goals

Below is an activity I posted to social media today. The focus of these questions is on considering the type of person you want to be rather than numeric goals - those goals should be created in response to the person you want to show up as.

Consider this: if you want to show up as authentic and in person with your client base or community but your goal is to automate 90% of your business you are going to have to put some serious thought into how you can create automations that consider those values. If you want to show up as an attentive parent or spouse then your goal of attending 40 evening networking events in the year may not align with those values. You probably could make that work - but your goal has to consider your values or the internal conflict that arrises will inevitably throw you off course.

Here is the exercise:

3 things to let go of in 2020

3 qualities about yourself you'd like to improve upon

3 characteristics of the person you want to show up as every day

3 things to let go of

What holds you back?

What beliefs do you have about yourself or your business that are keeping you from taking the next step?

What grudges are you holding?

Is there someone in your life feeding you lies or negative energy?

What are you most fearful of? Is it real?

3 qualities about yourself you'd like to improve upon

What do you love about yourself?

What is your secret sauce? - the thing other people don't possess

What quality, if replicated, could help you take over the world?

Is there something about you that you used to feel really good about or something you used to excel in that you don't feel like you have anymore?

What do people notice about and compliment you on that you don't believe about yourself?

3 characteristics of the person you want to show up as every day

When people interact with you what do you want them to feel?

When you feel like you have done a good job why do you feel that way?

In the people you admire what are the things you appreciate about them?

On a day that you kicked ass what were the things you did to kick ass?

When a customer walks away from a transaction with you what do you want them to tell their friends?

If you've already created your goals for the new year I would still encourage you to do this exercise and see if your goals align with the person you want to show up as. If you haven't created goals the first thing I'd ask you to do is think for just a moment about why you haven't set some goals.

Tell me:

What was your biggest take away from this exercise?
